MAMASE OPENS SHEARING SHED AND A DIPPING TANK

Roxeni village just outside Alice will be visited by the MEC for Agriculture and Land Affairs, Mr. Max Mamase on the 27th July, when he
will be officially opening a new shearing shed and a dipping tank.

An amount of R38 206,16 was used for the building material of this shearing shed and R21 779,94 was utilised to purchase shearing clippers.

Roxeni wool producers used to utilise a rondavel for shearing, sorting and classing their wool and this new shearing shed is a dream come
true for the wool producers of this area.

The Department is in a campaign to assist the former Ciskei and Transkei wool producers to improve their scale of production, which is
regarded as far below its capability.

South Africa is rates number three in the world in wool production and 75% of that wool comes from this province which is the best wool
producing province in this country. However, the disturbing factor is that the highest number of sheep is in the area of former Ciskei and
Transkei, but 80% of the wool that comes from this province comes from the Karoo region.

The main reason for this, is that people in these former homeland do not necessarily farm for the market but for household consumption.
Therefore their stock is neither bred for wool or mutton production.

It is for this reason that the department is on this campaign of ensuring that there is sufficient infrastructure, proper training on
productive farming and market opportunities for these farmers in order to realise our goal of promoting commodity production which is a
breakaway strategy from subsistence farming.

We appeal to small stock farmers to organise themselves and form Wool Growers Associations in their respective areas so as to speak with
one voice on their needs and enter the wool market as commodity groups.

The media is invited to attend this occasion, which begins at 11:00 in the morning.
